Background and Change

After 24 years of participating in the K-W Wood Show at Bingeman Park, the Grand Valley Woodcarvers found themselves facing a significant challenge. The Wood Show in Kitchener, which had been a central event for the club, came to an end. This prompted the Grand Valley Woodcarvers to evaluate their options and determine the best way forward.

Establishing a New Partnership

In response to the closure of the Kitchener Wood Show, the Grand Valley Woodcarvers formed a partnership with the Owl’s Nest. Both organizations had previously contributed to the Kitchener Wood Show. Together, they launched a new event called Wood Art in the Cities. This show became known for featuring the Canadian National Wildfowl Carving Championship as well as the Owl’s Nest Carving Competition.

Transitions

Following the 2019 edition of Wood Art in the Cities, the Owl’s Nest was no longer able to continue hosting their carving competition. Recognizing the importance of this event, the Grand Valley Woodcarvers Club decided to take on the responsibility of organizing the competition. Plans were made to offer the competition again in 2022 under the new name “Wood Art Competition,” which would be included within the broader Canadian National Wildfowl Championships, also known as the Canadian Nationals. We are pleased that the Ontario Wood Carvers Association (OWCA) has offered to run this part of our event in 2026, under the name “Magic in Wood”.

Financial Needs and Fundraising

Running the Canadian Nationals is a substantial undertaking that comes with considerable expenses. Fundraising is therefore an essential and ongoing responsibility for the club. Support from the community is crucial, and donations can be made via the Canada Helps link, which provides donors with immediate income tax receipts. The club encourages everyone to consider contributing to ensure the continued success of this important carving competition.
