Competition Rules
Regulations apply only to Canadian National Wildfowl Carving Championship
  • Only Wildfowl carvings will be accepted. No Domestic Birds.

  • A carver may enter carvings in ONE class only.
    (Purchase awards are not considered to be a class)

    Carvers who enter birds not native to North America are required to
    provide reference materials to assist the Show Committee and the judges.

  • All carvers may enter the Purchase Awards.
  • Entries are to be handmade, predominantly of wood. Other materials maybe used for habitat, eyes and structural purposes.

  • Habitat and feet in Canadian Master, Open and Intermediate Classes must be hand-made by the carver.

  • Driftwood is allowed as a base for dowel mounted birds only, or as habitat for Novice and Beginner Classes.

  • Cast feet/legs, stones, driftwood and the like are allowed in the Novice and Beginner Class only.

  • All carvings in categories 1 through 9 must be painted.

  • Carvings must have been completed in the 12 months prior to the opening date of the show date.

  • All entrants must complete and sign the entry form.

  • Entry fees are non-refundable. Post-dated cheques will NOT be accepted.

  • All entries should be pre-registered and accompanied by a cheque payable to Grand Valley Woodcarvers.

  • The decisions of the judges will be final!

Classes

Beginner Class

A carver who has not won ONE (1) BEST OF CLASS, or a total of FIVE (5) 1st place ribbons in Beginner Class competition.

Novice Class

A carver who has won ONE (1) BEST OF CLASS, or a total of FIVE (5) 1st place ribbons in Beginner Class competition.

Intermediate Class

This class is OPEN to any carver by choice, or who has progressed beyond the Novice Class by winning ONE (1) BEST OF CLASS, or a total of TEN (10) 1st place ribbons in the Novice competition. A carver who has won a 1st or 2nd place ribbon in Open Class competition cannot re-enter the Intermediate Class.

Open Class

All carvers may enter. Carvers who have won ONE (1) BEST OF CLASS at Intermediateor a total of TEN (10) 1st place ribbons in the Intermediate Class competition must advance to the Open Class.

Canadian Master Class

Carvers who have won ONE (1) BEST OF CLASS or a total of THREE (3) 1st place ribbons in the Open Class competition must advance to the Canadian Master Class. For the 2018 Show, anyone who has won a purchse Award (1st place) will be considered a Canadian Master/

There are two (2) special Classes

Contemporary Antique Decoys: 2 categories; Expert (Canadian Masters and Open) as well as Amateur (Intermediate and Novice). Prize money for Expert will be $100.00, $75.00 and $50.00. Prize money for Amateur will be $50.00, $30.00, and $20.00. Expert entries must be the carver’s original designand interpretation of an “old” decoy and in amateur copies are allowed . Decoys will be judged in hand. All entries must be signed and dated. Decoys should be made to look old by the manner in which they are carved, painted and finished. Shore birds and wading birds must be mounted on a dowel and have a simple base.
Interpretive Stylized Wildfowl: Any species, scale or finish: 2 categories; Expert (Canadian Masters and Open) as well as Amateur (Intermediate and Novice). Prize money for Expert will be $100.00, $75.00 and $50.00. Prize money for Amateur will be $50.00, $30.00, and $20.00.

Categories for Canadian Master Class:

Category 1

Decorative Life-Size Floating Ducks:

Diving or Marsh ducks, Grebes, Loons. These will be floated, but do not have to self-right.

Category 2

Working Decoys:

Diving Ducks, Marsh Ducks, Grebes, Loons, Geese, Swans. Combing, blending and scratch painting will be acceptable, but NO burning or fine texturing. Keels required. Decorative painting to the artist’s highest ability is expected. Decoys will be floated and must self-right from any position. Geese, Swans and their subspecies will be required to self-right from the side.

Category 3

Decorative Wildfowl:

All songbirds must be life-size with habitat

Category 4

Decorative Wildfowl:

All Birds of Prey and Upland game birds with habitat.

Category 5

Decorative Wildfowl:

Waterfowl, Shore birds, sea birds, ducks

Category 6

Decorative Miniature Wildfowl

Any species of bird
Decorative Miniature Wildfowl shall be one half (1/2) life-size or less.

The maximum length of the body cannot exceed 8 inches. The measurement is made from the base of the bill to the end of the longest upper tail covert using a tape measure.

Both criteria must be met.

Category 7

Decorative painting to the artist’s highest ability is expected. Decoys will be floated and must self-right from any position. Carvings must be mounted on a base with habitat.

Must be practical and durable. Decoys will be floated and must self-right from any position. Geese, swans and their sub-species will be required to self-right from the side. Combining, blending and scratch painting will be acceptable, but no burning or fine texturing. Keels required.

Category 9

Decorative Life-Size Smoothie

Any Species of Wildfowl.
No burning or fine texturing. Decorative painting to the artist's highest quality.

Decorative Song Birds - Life-Size

Carvings in this category must be mounted on a base with habitat.

All other birds

Entries must remain on display until 4:00 p.m. of
the last day of the show.

Carvings MUST be picked up by 4:30 p.m.
